Insurance Claims Adjuster With High School C-Minus in Biology Overturns Board-Certified Endocrinologist’s Prescription in 0.8 Seconds Flat

Twenty-two-year-old contractor who once thought the pancreas was a capital city in Europe overrides twenty-six years of clinical training with a single keyboard shortcut.

0.8 SECOND AUTO-DENIAL!
0.8 SECOND AUTO-DENIAL!

Clocking a personal-best seventy-five denials per hour, third-party claims processor Brandon Kroll overruled a board-certified endocrinologist’s eighteen-page clinical dossier Wednesday without reading past the patient’s zip code.

“There were charts,” Kroll said, brushing crumbs off a key labeled F4: DENY. “Charts are a lot.”

Kroll, whose medical training consists of a C-minus for drawing a frog, determined the patient needed a food diary, a conclusion he reached in 0.8 seconds and described as “instinct.”

The denial was reversed Thursday after the patient’s appeal letter asked, in its first line, for the name and board specialty of the reviewer who had overruled her physician.

“It asked what I was board-certified in,” Kroll said. “I had to look up what that meant. Then I had to look up who to give it to. Then it was approved.”

At press time Kroll had been reassigned to dental, where he reports the charts are smaller.

This dispatch is satire. The events, quotations and organizations in the report above are invented. The Receipt beneath it is not: every figure in it is drawn from published clinical evidence and is cited to its source.
